23.03.2008 - EU probes bunkering

The European Union’s Committee on Petitions plans to launch an investigation into bunkering off Gibraltar.
The investigation comes at the request of Verdemar-Ecologistas en Accion, a Spanish environmental group that has raised concerns about pollution on the Spanish and Gibraltar coasts, the Spanish media report.
The organization took their case to Brussels after the wreck of the 43,800-dwt bulker New Flame (built 1994) off Gibraltar.
But the group says frequent ship-to-ship bunkering operations in the area actually leads to more oil reaching local beaches than spills from major incidents.
Newspapers report that the European Parliament committee has responded to the group with a letter saying it will conduct a preliminary investigation.
The probe will involve environment and public health committees of the parliament.
